Let me start by saying I take full responsiblity for not knowing the rules. We were only supposed to be playing straight 9 with dp and flex option.

I turned in my lineup card with all 10 of my girls in the batting order 1-10 on the lineup card. Umpire accepted the lineup and agreed with batting 10. I did not designate a flex, dp, starting pitcher or catcher. After going thru the 1-9 girls my 10 came up and took a pitch. The defense then protested I had a illegal player. Again, I take full responsibility for allowing this to happen. My question is ...was she an illegal player, illegal substitution or should it be batting out of turn. No sour grapes other than the 14 year old young lady was disqualified for my mistake. I would have rather been tossed for stupidity than the player be disqualified. Umpire acknowledged he made a mistake but it is still my responsiblity. I just want to know if the correct ruling was made for my future reference.

If using the DP/FLEX option it must be made known prior to the start of the game!!!

If there was no designation for the player listed in the 10th position on the line up card, and no player in the line up designated as DP, the player listed in the 10th spot would be a substitute. Therefore when she entered the box, and the ball was live she has entered the game for the player listed 1st on the line up card. The player listed 1st on the line up card would be out of the game. This would be an unreported substitution, and in HS the head coach is warned, and the next time the head coach and the unreported substitute would be restricted to the dugout or DQ'ed if you prefer.

I can't remember if ASA has the same penalty, but ASA and NFHS are very similiar with a few exceptions.

    Thanks for the reply

Thanks for the reply. According to ASA if she was determined to be an illegal player then she would have been DQ. Just not sure why she would be an illegal player for batting out of turn. Again, my fault she was even in that position but I have learned a valuable lesson.

    correct ASA ruling

If the mistake was discovered and brought to the umpires attention while the incorrect batter is still at the plate, there is no penalty. The correct batter is placed in the box and assumes the count.

If it had been brought to the umpires attention after the batter had completed their turn at bat, the batter is declared out. The correct batter, which is now the #2 girl in the batting order is placed in the box and the 1st batter is skipped (the girl batting out of order took her spot).

If the player listed in the 10th spot was the Flex, and she entered on offense for anyone other then the DP she would be an illegal substitute and DQ'ed upon discovery.

If the player listed in the 10th position was not the Flex then she would be a substitute, and she would be an unreported substitute.

In either case there is no BOO.

BOO does not apply in this situation.
