I agree tht dead periods are stupid. There are many rules in North Carolina High School athletics that are for morons. I don't agree with recruiting, but working hard with what you got is smart. If you are lucky enough to have a coach who cares enough to do the work support them.

the problem here is if one coach breaks the rules it puts all those who play by them at a disadvantage.

    correct

which is why the offending coach and program needs to be sanctioned....
Dead periods are black and white....No contact....

This thread is about whether it is ok to to cheat... which is what that program is doing...

It has nothing to do with everyone's opinion, pro or con, on the dead periods.....

It is about whether the program in question, violated the current rule on the books concerning dead periods... If they did, and got caught, they need to be sanctioned.

bmac, let me answer your question first.

during dead periods, you cannot be in touch with ANY player on your softball team period. dead periods are usually when another sport (basketball, etc) are having their tryouts, but not limited to that. you cant have any contact with a player during EOC/EOS testing. big no-no

in off season, not dead periods, you can condition all you want, with the specific absense of bats, balls, gloves, the equipment required to do your sport. conditioning is conditioning and nothing else, you cant even watch videos of softball as a group.

if you have more than 8 girls show up, you have to leave the field, and in our county, you have to leave the school. you CANNOT have a group conditioning and another group practicing ball on the same day or at the same time, or in two different locations. its spelled out very nicely about that..

CD and others are right, it is the responsibility of the COACH to know the rules and time frames.

And the kids are the ones who suffer period. I dont like these rules, dont understand them completely, but i abide by them for the girls sake and because its the rules. Its all about what you teach them through your actions isnt it??

now i had to do nothing but laff, as the person standing next to me was the head man in charge of our conference. i'd love to be a fly on the wall during the conversation he will be having today at this school with the softball coach and her AD.

also have heard of another school who took a different view of the rules and came up with the: its ok to practice a full team with volunteer coaches because they dont get paid.

rules are specific: paid, volunteer (past years or current years) all abide by the same rules. here's how it was summed up to me: if you are a volunteer who helps at practice, keeps score, transports girls to the game, steps on the field during practice or game, coaches bases during the game or practice.....you are still considered a coach and are held responsible to follow the same rules as a paid coach.

Now, have i ever turned in someone for breaking these rules???? nope, i just follow them, karma is a wonderful thing, aint it???:pepper:

There was a team last year that got fined and banned from practicing for a couple days because of some wonderful 'volunteers' that thought they were above the rules. The head coach actually turned themselves in, which ended up being a good thing. Because a few days later someone turned them in by an anonymous letter. Which if an anonymous letter was sent to me, I'd just toss it in the trash anyway. Needless to say those 'volunteers', that were looking out for the best interest of the girls, aren't volunteering anymore.

Oh, as for blowing the whistle on somebody for doing it? I have mixed feelings about it. I probably wouldn't though, just cause in the end, it hurts the girls. But if straight up asked about it, then I'd have to.

If they were doing this yesterday with 25 girls, or more than 8, above is what they are guilty of right? Not the deap period thing.

thats correct, this is not a "dead" period so to speak, this is the period of time where you can only practice with 8 players or less, more than 8 it has to be solely conditioning....
