Many other HS sports are covered locally in Raleigh, and we don't get squat on softball playoff coverage. Golf, Tennis, Soccer, Baseball, but softball gets an article if WF-Rolesville goes on a 104 game winning streak, or you see some small print in the box scores if they have the space. All due respect To WF-R, but is that what it takes to get softball in the newspaper???

Maybe if the sport had better coverage and a little more "positive" promotion Raleigh Parks and Rec would try to build up it's very poor rec league to feed the capital city schools so we can compete with the country girls :)

Props to ESPN for actually mentioning the number of girls playing at UNC who are actually from North Carolina (during the UNC-Nebraska game) and that softball is really spreading east. About freaking time someone noticed.

Geez....now if we can get the local newspaper to wake up around here!

Update: Thanks to Braves post. This says it all.....something Wake COunty needs badl: "This is an incredible situation we have up here," said Alexander Central coach Monte Sherrill, whose team won the N.C. 4A state championship last season. "It's a monster that feeds itself. The seventh and eighth grade (middle school team) is as loaded as my high school team. It's going to build and build and build.

Same thing here in Wilmington with the Star News. Laney, Ashley, and Topsail all had 2nd round games last night. They got box scores called in by the coaches.

Laney/Hoggard baseball and high school track and field got front page articles and pictures. New Hanover/Greenville Rose on the third page with pictures. Hoggard girls soccer who I believe is undefeated did get some third page coverage, and then they travel an hour south of town to give the West Brunswick Girls softball some thrid page coverage.

I guess it is about having enough reporters. If that is the issue, I would be glad to cover the games I am at and write up an article and send in pictures.

WWAY TV 3 was at the Laney game and had a short video clip and a report on the Laney game. WECT did not even include the score in the scrolling sports scores.

Girls sports coverage is just not there, unless they are in the finals. Large local papers want to cover the national news. They should take note from the small local papers like the Topsail Voice, Pender Post, etc. They cover the high school sports, and cover all of them.

    I agree!!

With the many dollars that fastpitch softball brings to the Raleigh area, in particular, I just can't understand the lack of media coverage!

I'm estimating that during the TB season there is around a thousand teams or more that come to the area to compete; bringing with them 25 or more parents per team. And they stay most of the weekend, sometimes the whole week.

Maybe we need to do like one poster suggested a while back--contact the Visitors Bureau and let them know we are being slighted.

Maybe we need a PR agency to represent our interest. Surely, somewhere amongst the players or teams there is a PR person that could step up and get softball the recognition it deserves.

    Great Job Roxboro Newspaper

The N & O and Durham newspapers both could improve in there coverage. Just wanted to add that the Roxboro newspaper doe's an outstanding job covering softball!

Not picking on ya here but maybe you should email Tim Stevens of the N&O. He's a good man and truly loves HS sports, all of them. Sometimes we, myself included, don't see what we think should be in the paper, after all its the reporters job to report right? But in the grand scheme of the hard copy newspapers, its all about selling and profit. If the Raleigh city limits area is saturated by a subscription base that might not be able to expand or is maxed out then maybe the paper will print more "local" area stuff, pertaining to the smaller towns that will help sell copies in other neighboring counties. I have seen some games covered by the N and O and the Herald Sun. The reporters who come usually don't know alot about the game. Tim is a great guy at the N and O. He usually will take any information you give him, and you will see it appear in the N and O. I remember when Jemelle Hill was working at the N and O and one of the first things she said before she moved on to bigger things was that its so much going on in the Triangle, newspaper staffs are far understaffed to get it all covered. If you notice very little gets covered at the high school level in the local papers. Its the problem of having UNC, Duke, NCSU, and the plethora of small schools in the area combined with the Hurricanes and Durham Bulls there are alot of things to cover. I too wish there was more coverage but I understand that its highly unlikely.

    Media coverage??????? What a J-O-K-E

The media is only going to cover what they know about. The local NBC affiliate in my area will only give a crawl on the bottom of the screen if you call the score into them but that's it. The ABC affiliate as of recent has had some coverage but I think it might be due only to parents giving them the heads up with what's going on. I don't quit understand if your job is to report the sport scores & news why a broadcaster wouldn't be aware of how the local HS SB team is doing in the playoffs. Would anybody be talking about this if they were playing football or basketball....... I think not!!

pretty much the same everywhere. i do wish they would pull the ap wire and print scores more often.

also like in most things girls get a back seat to the guys. though i cant fault a papers choice to highlight STATE FINALS over 2nd or 3rd round playoffs. (especially since 2 gaston area runners won 3 titles - one girl won both the 3A 100 and 200 meters)
