It's this kind of logic that leads to .686 batting averages.
    1. If its' a hit, then it's scored a hit
    2. No scorekeeper worth two cents is intimidated by what someone with a rooting interest thinks.....score it fairly to all, and it's done
    3. It's not easy applying fair judgement on a play that happens fast and you can't go to replay to see it again
    4. If people want to pad stats, then they win a shallow victory...recruiters judge players based on what they see, not what they read
My post was targeted to those who enjoy scoring and to recommend an enlightening book.

There is probably no call in baseball that "nobody wants". It's imperative that everyone that has an interest in the scoring of a play be fairly treated. As mentioned earlier, giving a hit to batter that should have been scored an error makes the batter and fielder happy (and their families), but the pitcher is unfairly treated. For most every imaginable play there is a scoring outcome that credits some players and discredits other....kind of like debits and credits.

The runner also need to be charged with a caught stealing, and advances via E.

Many times I run into scorers that do not account for each advancement by a runner.

Another scoring issue that I see routinely not scored is: a foul pop is dropped or missed when the play should be made and no error is charged that extended the at bat. Even if the hitter Ks on the next pitch it is still an error.

Adding further, a player's ability should not come into scoring. As L/S stated, "should the play routinely be made" is the standard. Last week we had a disagreement in the press box about how a play should be scored.

Runner on first with a ground ball deep into the hole at SS. SS back hands it and wheels and throws in one motion attempting to get the runner at second and pulls 2B off the bag. They wanted to rule a FC and make not call. I argued that you need to either call it an error on SS or a base hit becuase it was not a poor choice that the SS made in attpemting to get the lead runner, it was his only play. Further, you should not assess an error to someone trying to make a great play when their efforts do not record an out and there is no further advancement, so accordingly this is a base hit. Their respones was that they saw the SS from the other team (who just happened to be the hitter in this situation) make an unbeleivable play from the deep hole an inning earlier so it was possible for this SS to get an out at first.

I stopped wasting my time with them after that.

Great point about recording the "caught stealing " on the runner in the example given....oversight on my part. It would be fun to have a casual meeting of scorekeepers to discuss the proper application of scoring rules....I'm sure it would be a lively discussion and everyone attending would learn a lot, for sure. Better and more equitable scoring would result, and I think many would choose to attend. Maybe CBC would host such an event and Mincmi could moderate???

I gave serious consideration to recruiting scores for SW4A.com and hosting a scoring class before the season.

    Maybe next Feb.

There is a lot of baseball between now and February.....maybe everyone would get better from having some new knowledge to apply this summer and fall.....and then be really sharp next spring.....just a thought.
