With just three weeks to go in the regular season, it is time to start looking at possible play-off wild card teams.

Almost certainly, conference tournaments will play a role in reshaping wild card births, but it is fun to start speculating.

In 4A there are four wild card births in the west, two in the east. 3A has two in both the east and west. 2A has only one birth in the east and two in the west. 1A has two in the east and six in the west.

    Playoff Berths

Conferences with five or more teams will get two berths in every classification in a 32-team bracket. Other berths will go to wild card teams based on the best regular-season overall record (winning percentage) and will be placed as designated on the brackets. If multiple teams tie for playoff berths, the NCHSAA tie-breaker procedure will be used to break the tie.

The regular season champion will be an automatic qualifier no matter how many teams are in the league. Let’s look at teams that are not currently in position for one of their leagues automatic births.

Hear is a start in the 4A west:

Independence is 14-3 and currently fourth in their league. Weddington is 12-4-1 in second, Providence 14-4, third.

I am most familiar with the CVAC and Hickory (3A) is currently 13-5 and 2nd in the conference behind Fred T. Foard. Foard does not look like they will be giving up that 1st place spot so Hickory will have to rely on a Wild Card if they plan to match their last year Final Four performance.
