What an incredible ride for the Wingate hitting machine. It's been unbelievable!

"The Wingate University baseball team leads the nation in hits and doubles, while ranking fourth nationally in homers and runs scored. Individually, junior outfielder Dodson McPherson (Graham, N.C.) and redshirt sophomore first baseman Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) each lead the nation in a category. In addition, they rank among the nation’s best in several categories.

Wingate leads the nation with 542 hits and 119 doubles. The Bulldogs have scored 338 runs; they have posted 48 homers. Five different Bulldogs have double-digit doubles on the year, while six of the regular starters are hitting .300 or better this season. Seven different Bulldogs have at least 20 RBI, while four have at least eight homers.

McPherson leads the nation with 78 hits and 62 RBI. He ranks eighth nationally with 12 homers and ninth with five triples. McPherson is fourth with 136 total bases and 25th with a .701 slugging percentage. The preseason All-SAC selection has reached safely in 46 of Wingate’s 47 games this year. He has a team-best 24 multi-hit games, while also leading the way with 15 multi-RBI games. McPherson has driven in at least three runs 10 times in the 2011 season.

Yeung leads the nation with 23 doubles and 146 total bases. He ranks second nationally with 59 RBI, trailing only his teammate McPherson. Yeung leads the league and ranks fifth in the country with 13 homers, while ranking 18th nationally in slugging percentage. The reigning SAC Player of the Week is currently riding a 14-game hitting streak. In those games, Yeung is hitting .507 with 12 doubles, nine homers, two triples, 33 RBI and 22 runs scored. He is second on the team with 23 multi-hit games and 14 multi-RBI games this year."

It's unfortunate that they have been hit hard (pardon the pun) with key injuries to pitchers. This is a young team with some young arms. If they can all get healthy at the same time, this will be a difficult team to beat.

Great season for Dodson McPherson, Brian Yeung, Cody Shelton and a host of others. I remember telling my son when Dodson was a freshman that he displayed a ton of potential and in my opinion was the most talented athlete on the team. He has not let me down.
