Don't get me wrong, I think overall, Umps do a great job and I sure wouldn't dream of doing it for no more than they get for it. I have a great time doing the give and take ribbing with 'em. There are, however, some points on the game that afford them an undue amount of leeway and many of them take it. Another point that I struggle with is the "neighborhood" call. Why is fastpitch, especially at the higher levels of competition, not called similar to baseball? You have the same risk for injury and the assumption of an out based on a soundly executed play should be the same. But ya never get the call. Drives me crazy....:34:

Leslie and her older sister Lyndsey went to East Rutherford HS. Very good softball players out of Ellenboro NC.

""Hey, I remember a tournament in Rock Thrill, one summer, where the pitcher started her motionby spinning around on the mound (to face the outfield) then made like a bird in flight, ballerina, type of move to spin herself back facing the batter! And through strikes that way! It was quite amazing to watch! Now do I think that it was legal, no, I don't see how it could be. All motion from pitcher, following pause, should be forward motion. I don't think that can be accomplished by turning to face the outfield! But hey it was sure interesting, watching her throw that way! LOL""

That definitely is a Steve Cagle pitch. He taught it to my daughter Brittany and she spent countless hours/days/weeks, perfecting it. She would beg her travel coaches to let her throw it and a while a few allowed her to, it usually caused such a ruckus from the other team that everyone thought it best to stop throwing it. I can't remember the exact mechanics of it, but she did get more than one umpire to watch her throw it off the field and all told her that it was legal. Just one of the great memories that we will always carry of Steve Cagle, a truly wonderful person!

agree, Leslie Brooks loved Steve Cagle, worked on that pitch in practice and got the ok to use it in the state at rock hill. it did cause an absolute uproar, the kid could throw it for strikes 99% of the time, and legal every time. things like this will be missed, Steve was inventive and his kids loved him for it.
