    Great Points

The fact he is new he has no idea about what he has. When I posted I did not take this into account. If I were in his shoes I would definitely want to take a look at my returning players first. At some point I would want to see the new guys before spring.

To my knowledge I do not believe South Meck has allowed freshmen to participate in 8-man or conditioning in the past so this year is nothing new. Braves and Dbacks is this correct? If so, what was Bagwell's thinking on this subject.

Thanks guys for all the in put and thoughts you have given me, but with all that has been said, and the more I thought about what you said, the bottom line seems to be this: ........things at SM have dramatically changed, ........things haven't made sense since Bagwell left....I quess we'll all have to wait and see! One more thing, as some have mentioned, if the middle schools are what the coaches are looking at to feed the high school, what about the kids that move into the area from out of state or that didn't go to the middle school that feeds the high school. If you don't look at EVERYONE, your sure as hell are going to miss something. Bagwell (AK) and Coach H.(P) are looking at freshman and new comers, that I know for a fact!! If I was in the coaches shoes, yes, I would look at what I have returning first and foremost, but I would also look hard at the newcomers and freshman.

To be honest, I don't remember. I know my son played varsity his freshman year, but I don't remember if he participated in the fall workouts. I do remember this, although he led his team in wins as a freshman, I wish he never "played up". The jealousy he encountered was a little much for a 15 yo.

Gotta give him some time to get his feet wet, PhillieDave. I hear ya, but to be fair, he must evaluate his returnees and upperclassmen first. I know this, when the season starts and he feels that he has a talented JV player that can be helpful on the varsity without sacrificing his playing time...that player will be brought up quickly.

The other thing I recall is the difference in size between a freshman/sophomore vs the senior player. I remember my son as a freshman (he was 14 or 15) pitching against some of those 18 yo men (some that could grow a beard in a day) and I was thinking ~Wow...I better increase his life insurance~

It is very difficult to pluck a young player on to the varsity. Not only will he have to deal with the difficulty of playing against much more advanced players, but dealing with the "shots" that he will receive from the players (and their parents) whose innings he is taking and the loss of support from his same age teammates playing on JV's can be emotionally crippling. It takes a maturity beyond their years. I don't recommend it for many.

PhillyDave, freshmen did not participate in 8 man at SMeck last yr under Bagwell so that has not changed. He changed when he went to AK. As far as conditioning I'm not sure, but I don't think freshmen partcipated in that last year either. So I do not think anything has changed under the new coach.

I don't remember any Freshman the 4 years were there....but, South Meck had pretty strong Juniors / Seniors returning each year. It was hard enough to work some of the Sophmores into the rotation much less the Freshman.

A lot depends on the school and situation...Audrey Kell does not have a Senior class and this will be their first year as a baseball team....Bags will need to look at everyone he can....not only does he have to fill his Varsity team but he will need to fill a JV team as well.

You would think the "new" coach at South Meck would try and see as many incoming players as possible to evaluate the talent for a program he doesn't know a whole lot about. I know he had On Deck running his program during the football season....you would think he is getting some valuable feedback there as well.

You still have to let South Meck's new coach take his shot and see what he can do....I just don't think he knows how tough the SW4A is going to be in baseball....he's going to get initiated really quick though!:hallo:
