Would you let your daughter play for this coach?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This happened last weekend at a college conference tournament held in NC.

This happened in every game that his team played in except the last, when the officials told him that they would let the opposing coach know the cheating tactics he was utilizing within the game.

    Scenario....
runner, uni #1 on 2nd and runner, uni #2 on 3rd, time would be called, and base runners would be brought to the front of the dugout for a conference. All members of the offensive team would empty out of the dugout for a huge huddle.
    Roster size is above 30.

After minutes of discussion, huddle would break, base runners would return to bases, except #2 would still be at 3rd, but now #3 is at 2nd.

He would not announce any substitution.

Umps finally caught on, questioned him about his tactics, to which he replied, " you can't prove it".

What are your thoughts on this?

What is he teaching his players?

What if the player he wants to be the unreported substitute refuses to cheat?

    Will she get benched?

Where does a win at all cost attitude vs sportsmanship within the game apply?

How many of you coaches check to make sure the runners that came off the field, are the same that went back on?

    discussion please.....

He cheated he should be suspended. Ump/conference officials failed at their jobs.

its blatant cheating....but it is no different than having a player fake a injury (to give a pitcher time to rest) or having the on deck player yell at the catcher to distract them on a play at home......it's taught by coaches that want to win more than teach their kids about right/wrong and good sportsmanship....This coach, nor any coach is doing the kids a favor by using these tactics.

    ACTUALLY....

NCAA Page 79 Rule 8-4, g states "No Penalty". I personally feel this violates the spirit of the game. The coach should be ejected for this and next game. Runner should be declared out.
Do you really want to teach your cheating is ok.

    No Penalty?

If I caught on, I would call time out, conference with the umpire and quietly show him/her the illegal act. I would then let the action continue and after the next successful play, I would appeal for an illegal substitution.

    Not my girls!

No way I would let them play for that coach if I knew ahead of time. That is blatent cheating and sets a very bad example ('Cheat until you get caught and then cheat again') for the rest of the girls lives.

Not sure what I would do if I didn't find out until after the fact and my DD had signed with that school and potentially received $$ to play. That would be a very tough call...

    No way...

It would happen once, ok, its a mistake...2nd time, we are done.

There have been several HS coaches who advocate "cheating until caught" and "better to ask forgiveness than permission".

Intentional Crow Hop by pitchers to gain speed, outlawed bats, many other examples.

:butt: <That is what they are doing to the game when they cheat.

    Nope, not I

This is not the type of lessons I want my daughter learning ... EVER... so no way would she play for this team, even if they were the ASA National Champs and future Olympic team all rolled up into one.

Saw similar tactics by a team at the Fusion Showcase last fall. Player would be out, and the coach would have them stand there to see if anyone noticed they never left the field. Same coach had players "steal" to the next base on a foul and have their players stay there when the foul was called to see if anyone would notice or call them on it.

These teams teach kids not the find all you have within you to win philosophy this game is about, but the win at any costs even if by cheating philosophy.

Hate that as much as I hate walk ball.

    cheating coach...

I just happened to be there!!! My dd's team was in the tourney and was beaten by this !@#$%^&' s team. Get this... He is up 8-1 in the top half of the 7th. All of a sudden in the middle of the inning, he calls time and goes to the plate ump to appeal for an illegal pitching change that happened 3 innings earlier. Now that was a legal move, but the only point he made was that he is absolutely classless. Then in the bottom of the inning, he purposely walks one of our seniors, knowing it was her last game of her college career because he had recruited her and she turned him down. Yet another classless act. so no, my dd would never play for a coach like that if she never played again. Forgive me TBR friends, but the more I read the comments of thread it just brought back the memory and I couldn't hold my tongue any longer. Cheese105, I wish I had known you there, I would have loved to have met and talked with you.
