    Diamond Devils

The Diamond Devils won the first three games of pool play. The Devils opened with a 3-1 win over Midwest Prospects. Mike Cisco (Wando) picked up the win. Wil Boyd (Hickory) scored 2 of the Devils runs. The Devils won 2
games on Saturday, beating Perfect Game Orange in the day's 1st game. The Devils were lead at the plate by Kyle Roller's (Richmond Senior) monster 3-run homerun and Wil Boyd's double. The Devils won game 2 of the day beating Palm Beach Hammerjacks 1-0 behind the 1-hit effort of Northwestern's lefty Ryan Hinson. The Devils conclude pool play on Sunday.

Worldwoodbat.com is having server problems,so I haven't been able to get any info. I did hear from Zach Rosenbaum yesterday and he informed me that Impact won 2-0 yesterday. If they win their game today they advance from their pool.

HOUSTON HEAT 7 IMPACT BASEBALL 3

The Houston Heat scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to overcome a 2-0 deficit and cruise to a 7-3 victory over Impact Baseball.

RHP Justin Drabek, one of two sons of former Cy Young Award winner Doug Drabek on the Heat, pitched the first 4 innings for the Heat to pick up the win, allowing 2 runs. Justin’s younger brother Kyle is scheduled to start the Heat’s semifinal game against the Bayside Yankees.

RHP Anthony Morris pitched the final 3 innings to pick up the save.

The key blow in the Heat’s rally was a 2 run single by 3B Koby Clemens, son of Houston Astros ace Roger Clemens. CF Jay Bruce of the Heat went 2-3 in the contest with a triple, 2 runs scored and 2 runs batted in.

last I heard, the O's were 0-1-2 and that would have made it very tough to get out of pool play. On a positive note, supposedly they had only given up 5 runs in those 3 game. I heard their last game in pool play was vs Chet Lemmons Juice but that doesn't square up with the brackets above.

On a final note, many of the O's got set up w/ Roger Clemmons who was on site with his oldest.

Sorry no report earlier, but I've had trouble getting on line remotely from Ft. Myers. First. congrats to Impact, what a great performance. I can't wait to hear more details. Second, congrats to TR, whose College Select team also made the final 8, with a huge 8-7 pool play victory over Cameron Maybin and the Cincinnati Reds Scout team. Also congrats to the Carolina Cubs, who went 2-1-1 and came within a whisker of also qualifying. I got to see them play a little in their last pool game, a 1-1 tie.

For the O's the 0-2-2 results were disappointing, but the play and the effort were very good. They played four outstanding opponents and got great pitching in their four games, giving up only 10 runs total. They out-hit their opponents but left runners in scoring position over and over again. The first game they faced Perfect Game Midwest and 92-mile per hour pitching and tied 1-1. Wes Wrenn pitched very well for the O's in that one. Later on Friday they faced the Colorado Slammers and were shut out 2-0, again by some impressive pitching, but they out hit the Slammers 7-3. Tom Porter went the distance for the O's, giving up only three first inning hits and no walks, but the offense couldn't push the runs across. On Saturday the O's played a powerful team from the Miami area, Powerhouse, and took a 3-1 lead to the 7th behind a great outing by David Baumgardner. The Powerhouse scored 2 in the 7th and the game ended in a 3-3 tie. Finally, on Sunday, the O's faced a trio of great pitchers from the Houston Heat, committed to Texas, Texas A&M and Rice, respectively, and had looks at three of the nation's finest. Those guys had sliders the likes of which we haven't seen before, 88-89 mph with lots of late movement. With Drabek and Clemmons on the bench coaching, no surprise they have pitching. Still the O's lost only 4-2 and left the tying runners on second and third in the bottom of the seventh. This time Jeremy Mathis had a fine outing, going 5 innings and giving up only 1 earned run. Jeremy left after 5 trailing just 2-1.

Like I said, a fine effort.

As an aside, we watched Drabek's younger son close the round of 16 game for the Houston Heat against X-team last night, and he was legitimately 95 on the stalker gun. And he is only a junior. Quite a stir among the scouts. He hadn't pitched in a while because he is a Texas 5A football star, too, having scored 3 touchdowns on Friday night including a kick-off return for a touchdown. Can anybody say athlete? We also saw Clemmons oldest son Koby hit a home run and had pictures with and got autographs from Roger, who was very gracious to all the fans when he really just wanted to watch his kid play.

I need to wrap up. It has been fun down here. Not quite Jupiter, because everything is spread out at 4 or 5 locations. Still loads of great ballplayers and lots of good play!

    Great report DB!!!!

I'm glad Roger had a better experience since the last time he went to his son's tournament. ( for those that don't know...Roger was ejected by the umpire....who the next day had apologized to Roger )
