I believe O's enthusiasm was reserved for AJ because he missed the entire HS season. What the entire O's staff accomplished this week was reminiscent to what they accomplished in Jupiter.....AWESOME!!!

    Congrats, then a story

Congrats to all the teams in the medal round and especially to the Diamond Devils for winning it all. We saw some unbelievable teams and some great baseball -- and lots and lots of scouts and college coaches. I was proud of both On Deck teams -- especially the 18s with their 4-2 record and appearance in the medal round and an unbelievably inspirng 6-3 victory over Team FL USA and two 91 mph throwing left-handers, but the 17s as well with their 2-2-2 record out of the pool rated by PG as the toughest in the field. Both On Deck teams had great pitching performance -- the 17s staff allowed only 15 runs in 6 games and their losses, 5-3 to the East Cobb Strikers (and the Atlanta Braves 3rd round draft choice) and 5-4 to the Knoxville Yard, were nothing to be ashamed of for a bunch of '05s.

Anyway, the story -- round of 16, East Cobb Braves (18s) vs Nor Cal (18s). Nor Cal leads 2-1 in the bottom of the 7th. Two quick outs and then an East Cobb batter drives one way over the EC field 1 left field fence up into the parking lot for an apparent game-tying home run. However, as he rounds the bases and comes home he jumps to the plate and is mobbed by his teammates. One problem -- all independent observers agree he clearly missed the plate. After the players got to the dugout, NorCal appealled and the batter was called out. NorCal wins, 2-1. Now, whether you think the ump got it right or should have looked the other way, you have to admire the guy. He'll never work another game at East Cobb but he made what he thought was the right technical call even though it eliminated one of the host teams. BTW, the EC Braves team in the championship was the Braves 17s. East Cobb had 4 teams in the final 16 (also the Strikers and the Cardinals) and Nor Cal had 2 -- the 18s and 17s.

Just home from Atlanta. Diamond Devils 18's won three games today (5-1 over LA Legands, 7-6 over Midland Redskins and 4-3 over East Cobb Braves) to win the Perfect Game WWBA U18 National Championship at East Cobb. Tournament MVP honors to Matt Wieters (Diamond Devils, Stratford High and Ga Tech) and Cameron Maybin (Midland Redskins and TC Roberson High) while tournament Most Outstanding Pitcher honors to Craig Thomas (Diamond Devils, Lexington High and USC). Diamond Devils completed the tournament undefeated at 7-0-2. Congratulations to entire Diamond Devils squad on a job well done.

NC and Charlotte area players on the Diamond Devils roster include:

    Dan Woodall (Hopewell and UNCC)
Ryan Basham (East Forsyth and Elon)
    Zach Rosenbaum (North Meck)
Wil Boyd (Hickory and Clemson commitment)
    Alex Chapman (Freedom)
    Ryan Hinson (Northwestern)
    Leif Demmink (Fort Mill)

A total team effort (similar to the On Deck run in Jupiter last year). Wil, Alex and Dan played 20 innings in the Atlanta heat on Sunday making key contributions. Ryan was great in relief in game 1 and game 3 today. Cameron Maybin launched a 3 run shot in game two that landed in the parking lot, bounced over the property fence and probably reached the Kell High parking lot (for those familiar with the East Cobb complex).

Man, I wish I could have seen those games .....

235 games played over 1 week in one area .... Yep. Pure heaven to a baseball junkie.

Congrats to the Diamond Devils .... It's nice for the Carolinas to "represent" and there was a STRONG NC presence on that team !!!!!! A bunch of great young men too.
