    Yelling is OK

It's perfectly alright to yell at them!! Just don't do it out loud!!

I've read a lot about a few great coaches and most of them say yelling, etc., is not part of their tools. The exception that stands out is Bobby Knight and maybe Vince Lombardo. And love them or hate them they made winners; or at least brought the winner out of them. I'm sure some of their players were pretty seriously negatively affected, also. We don't hear about most of them.

If you get a chance look up Augie Garrido, the Texas baseball coach. He does the right kind of yelling.

But no matter what he does, remember: Don't yell out loud!! Think about it!

Vince Lombardo! That must have been before he and his brother, Guy, stopped singing and changed it to Lombardi!

:trophy:...yep, I used to dance to Vince and Guy every New Year's Eve. Good thing for Vince that he didn't lose his day job

    some interesting responses...

some of this thread got hijacked, I agree yelling can serve a purpose, I was more questioning when a kid is ready for hit and can handle it w/o driving them away from the game.

my original post was disgust at 8u coaches yelling nonstop, and as I coach first base, I see the look in their defense eyes' that they can't wait to get away from this dude. Meanwhile all their girls had terrible technique and the coaches couldn't offer anything more than "got to get your glove down" bs.

I guess what I am saying, its sickening that kids aren't taught or "coached" what to do with their body and technique, and then when they fail in a game, the coach yells.

We do yell instructions from far away-- we are the only 8U team I have seen that refuses to put a coach in the OF-- so they can make their own decision in their brain instead of someone in their ear deciding for them.

Wish I had the examples of coaches as teachers back when I had the opportunity to coach. The rant and rave approach don't get it done. It's one thing to speak firmly and with authority. However, when a lack of respect for the players is demonstrated by a coach, there will be problems.
