At a college game over the weekend I watched the home team trailing by 1 run go into the last inning getting the lead off man on base. The coach gave the next hitter the sac sign which he executed to the letter; in fact the bunt up the 3d base line was so good he beat it out for a hit. Now there are men at 1st and 2nd with no out. The home team has its 5th 6th and 7th batters coming up. What would you have done as Coach? If I get enough responses to this post, ill let you know what that coach did.

I want to force the defense to make a play. I also want to eliminate the double play, so I bunt again.

In all probability, I have runners now at 2nd&3rd with 1 out. Best case, they threw it away and the game is over ...

They now are faced with walking the next batter to set up the double play AND pulling in the IF for the force at home. That makes it easier to get a ball through the IF.

    What would you do?

I would bunt the two runners over.

I agree with what you said above: takes away the double play, pulls the infield in, requires the infield to make a play and makes the pitcher concerned about snapping one into the dirt.

Of course after bunting the runners over, the opposing team will walk the bases loaded which creates a whole new set of decisions. I look forward to your response because obviously the coach did not bunt the runners over.

I agree with the first two as well... that would be the obvious response I believe. So let's hear what he did, I don't think it was that easy of a question. :xyzthumbs

...to bunt or not to bunt that...

is the question? Depends on what you think of your next three hitters? If one of them cannot drive a ball or get a base hit then you are probably in for a long season offensively!? To bunt would be the logical move perhaps AND I have seen many teams lose for not doing so including my own! No one has mentioned the speed os savvy of the runners on base? Steal 'em perhaps NOT oh well maybe... Poor bunter may cause a DP with poor non savvy runners on base espe #4 over at 1st duhhhhhhhhhhh...

    What the Coach did

:scared2: The coach elected to allow his batters to swing away and did not even attempt a bunt. The first batter, to his credit, did try to go to the right side but popped the ball up. The next two batters just swung away and both were recorded outs without either runner moving up. I agree with most of the panel that the bunt was in order.

    Which team am i?

on offense.. it is early in the season, and not a conference game, i want to find out if those kids can handle a pressure situation. If i am coaching 3d base i call the hitter down the line and tell him to just put the ball in play, forget going to right just get a good swing and put the ball in play, however the mind game puts pressure on the defense and probably pulls the corners in expecting a bunt increasing the possibility of a base hit...if he fails then bunt if the next kid can get it down....this will tell you what you need to do in conference play when it counts...

on defense, don't go to the mound, call the play...as soon as the pitcher comes set, the ss moves up even with the 2b runner, slaps his glove and breaks for 3d, the corners move in for bunt, 2d baseman breaks for 2d..pitcher wheels and picks 2 base runner. if runner doesn't break for third, pitcher holds ball and you know what the batter is going to do...set your defense accordingly...scout in stands may urge H. coach not to be to aggressive base running during conference play...

with aluminum bats the bunt play has taken a back seat to the long ball..

I think that you should move the runners up with the bunt. Then you will get the walk if the opposing coach has sense. With bases juiced and 1 out, you have to look at the hitter and say whether he can squeeze or hit and get a deep fly ball. If not, you gotta get a pinch hitter that can do either or. If your squeezing you better put your hot wheels on third or you risk a throw out at the plate.

But above all, your players have to execute. If they don't or can't then they need to stay extra time after practice to work on these things.

At the college level, you hope they can execute by now....
