There used to be an ump in the Raleigh area who could do all that! At least, that's what he thought. I asked him once if he was an ump or the master of ceremonies. He loved attention!

    been there done that

granted baseball doesnt have the running slap - but if you are watching the ball for where it crosses the plate you WILL see if the batter steps out of the box. (especially ON the plate)

i think that should really be the field umps call being out of the box with contact.

but if a coach is continually having to redo the lines - HE (or she) will take a step to stop their players from erasing the lines

I'll grant you that the step between the boxes (possibly on the plate), as shown by that picture in the other thread, should be an easier call than out the front of the box with a running slapper, but the slappers are the ones that most people are complaining about.

When they can make the 60' run in 2.8 seconds, how many steps have they made before you can drag your eyes from the ball to the foot. Was that foot still in the air at contact?

Oh... and one more thing: as umpire, you also have to be watching where that ball goes because it might be close to the foul line and the fair/foul call is the plate umpire's responsibility, too.

I think that ASA has a rule against earsing the lines of the batters box. If I'm wrong I'm sure someone on here will let me about it....... lol

Two years ago my dd played in a ASA 14U national qualifier in Wilmington. First batter comes to the plate and starts clearing away the lines with her cleats and blue gives her a strike before the first pitch was even thrown

No worries... the defensive coach and parents in the stands will gladly help him out with the extra duties.

Ain't that the truth. In fact, with so many pairs of eyes, they can watch the batter's foot, the pitcher's feet, the rolling ball all at once.

One problem is that the views from the 1B side and the 3B side seem to provide different views. If 1B says foul, 3B says fair; if 3B says her foot was out of the box, 1B says it was in...
