....so heres the gig.....batter turns to bunt, she makes contact, lays down a nice ball in fair territory, the ball takes a funny hop right back up and hits the kids bat, then falls back into fair territory.

    You make the call.

Was the kid still holding the bat? If so was the kid in the box when the ball hit the bat?

If the bat is laying motionless and the ball hits it, No call. If the bat hits the ball, dead ball. If the batter intentionally makes contact (throws or drops bat into the ball, dead ball, batter out.

....this time she was still holding the bat but it looked like she was out of the box on the way to first.....and, now that you mention this variation, I have seen the same type thing happen when the kid lays down a bunt, drops her bat and the ball kicks back to hit the bat.

So hook TBR up with some answers please!

From the ASA rulebook (NFHS is similar, but I don't have it handy):

So... bat in hands while in batter's box: Foul Ball (Exception 1)
Bat in hands, out of the batter's box: Dead Ball, Batter Out.
Bat on ground, and ball moves into bat: Play on (Exception 2)
Bat on ground and moves into ball: Dead Ball, Batter Out
