You run full blast to your right and catch a ball back handed ,and lose your footing and see if you will stand up...I really don't understand what the kid looking like has to do with the call !!!

    Exactly !!!

Betterbatter, I think has hit the bullseye, it could have went the other way with another umpire.."Judgement Call", would be the best answer for this scenario. Rules do not apply in this situation...Judgement Call is the correct answer...the only thing after this call the offense scored like crazy, could this had been what got the ball rolling....momentum will win many ball games !!!!

BB, I agree with you that the blues can often see things that the stands miss. I know of an ump who likes to remark that he'd like to try calling from the dugout or the outfield because the view must be better out there. I also know that umpires can be blocked from seeing something that is quite obvious from other angles.

It is a judgement call whether or not the player had control. What sparked my original post, was someone stating
which is not a completely true statement that I felt should be corrected.

While it is true that this is a judgement call, were I the defensive coach in this scenario, again if as described and it was a game changing call, I would politely ask the umpire making the call what he saw that made it not a catch/out. If he told me that she had control until she hit the ground, I would then politely ask him to check with his partner about the correct application of the rule. The best umpires want to get the call right.

The art of second-guessing calls after the game is right up there with Monday Morning Quarterbacking. And opinions are like, well, you know.

    Depending on angles......

......as jeff, great name BTW, stated above as to what one ump sees in the field and me and you see in the stands. Yep, sometimes we from the stands are right but the ump doesn't have the opportunity to address his call from more than one angle. I think that jeffers post is awesome. He has, no doubt, made sense of the objectiveness of what an ump calls.
