Got a 9 year old pitcher thats developing a blister on his index finger, when he pitches,Of coarse everytime he throws, he aggravates it. Was wondering how a kid that young could do to get thru it?? Any special remedies out there?? Thanks in advance.

    9 yr old

Tell him to quit throwing untill it is totally well. Super glue or new skin will be a quick fix in a pinch. But at 9 years old the best remedy is to let it heal all the way. No need in creating a potential long lasting problem. Another concern would be will he change his grip even with the super glue on his finger to avoid the area on his finger. Maybe even change his throwing motion. No need, let him rest and recover completely.

    Youth Coach (Finger Blister)

I am hoping that at 9 years old, that the only pitch he is throwing is the fast ball and maybe a change. If he is throwing curves, there are a lot more things to worry about then blisters. Assuming the blisters are from fast balls, after the current condition heals (rest and antibiotic creams), I would check out his grip on the ball. He might be holding the seams wrong or too tight causing the blister. The last time I checked the AMA book of remedies for blisters, I didnt see "CRAZY GLUE" listed as a endorsed product for a skin disorder?

i agree with most everybody on this topic. i never taught or encouraged kids that young to throw a breaking ball either. in fact it was illegal in our rec league for kids that young to throw a curve. BUT when we went off to play in post season tournaments against out of town teams, breaking pitches are ALL we saw. but we had not been able to throw them (so we were behind in that area) and we darn sure could'nt hit them. some of the same pitchers you read about on here that have had really good prep years and already signed to play D1 ball somewhere were killing us at 9 and 10 years of age throwing breaking balls. i remember their names to this day. its a double edged sword. you're torn between protecting the kids but then they see everybody else doing it, plus they're winning and you're not. its a hard sell when parents are wanting the biggest bang for their aau dollar. darned if you do and darned if you dont.
sorry for getting off the topic. the best thing is to let the kid heal but as luck would have it, its usually your ace that gets these things. :twocents:

have u tried using tea bags? I used to get a blister on the inside of my middle finger, you just keep tea bags on it a night or two and it'll harden the skin so it wont hurt no more.
